The Police Building on Centre St. — abandoned by the NYPD in 1973 — has been a celebrity magnet ever since its retrofitting as a co-op 14 years later. Never, though, has it boasted an apartment like the one featured in the latest Architectural Digest — a 21st-century palace built inside the NYPD's gym.

The mag doesn't say so, but the owners are Joan and Alvin Einbender. He's a former COO of Bear Stearns and gave Wall Street's Alan Greenberg his nickname when they were college roommates and Greenberg confided his troubles getting dates: Einbender suggested he rename himself Ace. A leading philanthropist, Einbender paid half the $1.27 million cost of restoring the entrance gate to the Jewish Quarter of Jerusalem's Old City. He spent lots more — $10 million-plus — to buy his new four-bedroom home and hire Charles Gwathmey to redo it, sources say.

Though Einbender's apartment is unique, his aerie isn't: There is also a cupola-topped tower containing a three-bedroom apartment with a 25-foot-high living room. Calvin Klein bought it from Steffi Graf for $1.8 million in 1998 and is in residence, awaiting the completion of Richard Meier's glass towers on the Hudson. Though celebs like Cindy Crawford and Christy Turlington have moved out, the Police Building still boasts high-profile owners, including fellow supe Linda Evangelista, author Toni Morrison, editor Jason Epstein and photographers Gilles Bensimon and Antoine Verglas. But they weren't the attraction for Einbender. "The space is like nothing you have ever seen," he says. He's right.

Ana Beatriz Barros was in almost every show this week, so it seems it was a smart decision to dye her hair (here she is in the Elie Saab show, I uploaded a hi-res version here). "It's not that gentlemen prefer blondes", wrote Anita Loos in her famous best seller, "it's just that we look dumber".
