her boyfriend is actually french and is starting to get good recognition over there. His two latest records are really worth listening to.
Melanie is featured in one of his videos for a song called "caravane". You see them two on a roof in Paris while it's snowwing and it's a beautiful video but she looks drunk in it . She's now 24 but a journalist has asked him why a young teenager would do that and that it was "gross".

Personalityfloats, the comment made by clearbluesky that you quoted up there was actually not as ignorant as you think. While a person's skin color is usually used to classify his or her "race", there actually is no real definition of race... because race doesn't really exist... It's a socially constructed concept.

Now, sure, you can look up "race" in a dictionary... But what is it really? The human race (species)? The Jewish race (religion)? Skin color (the caucasion race)? A mythical racially pure group (The Aryan race)?

Most people assume a person's race based on his or her skin color. Well, in many states like Indiana and Missouri, there's something called a "one drop rule"? It states that a person is defined as black if just ONE great-grandparent was black, regardless of what he or she looks like.

The notion of race has been largely abandoned by scientiests. Geneticists, anthropologists, and other scientists have been unable to agree on the physical characteristics that determine racial categories. The physical differences that may be used to define race are not discrete, but in reality, often blur or overlap.

There is no "racial gene", and no single gene that determines skin color... It's actually determined by the combinations of 4 or 5 genes.

Thus, race as a biological concept is virtually meaningless.

As for ClearBlueSky's comment about white people being labeled as racist by black people as revenge or because white people are supposed to be superiour, that's incorrect. The model in the photo was just doing her job, it's the photographer, the company that printed the photo... and every other aspect utilized by the media to portray the stereotypes that are associated with each group. White people are not labeled as racist because they're white and they're not labeled as racist because other ethnic minorities want revenge. In fact, to label ANYONE as racist is pretty screwed up. (I've only come across one person who was enough of a racist, sexist bastard to share his thoughts (that still piss me off) enough for me to correctly label him. I'm proud to say I got him fired for refusing to help any black person who came into the store and informing me that women are less intelligent than men... and it was my boss. :D)

People are raised to stereotype others based on their perceieved group. Just because the model above looks to belong to one ethnicity doesn't mean that she does (okay, even though we know in this case)... but do you really want to think about EACH person you come across with such detail? Nope, that's why stereotypes exist.

Ever notice that when you're describing a person in conversation you mention things like their skin color, sex, or any mental or physical disabilities? White males are supposed to be (at least in America, where I live) the superordinate group. If they're not a white male, people usually feel the need to specify that.

Personalityfloats, I've actually NEVER met any woman who has been fed raw meat through a cage. I agree that ethnic minorities are portrayed differently in the media. But, notice, how many MEN of ethnic minorities are portrayed like this? I'm sure there's something out there, but nothing I can recall. I feel that people are losing site of this image in the argument concerning racism. I feel that sexism as well as racism should be considered when seeing stuff like this. I mean, if ethnic minorities got the sh*t end of the stick, look up the discrimination that women of ethnic minorities deal with.

One last comment. ClearBlueSky, what country are you FROM? The only place I can think of is America... and you're Native American. Other than that, you couldn't possibly remember what your country was like before foreigners... especially if you were alive to type that a few months ago. I am offended by that comment. It just seems so SAD.

Just because someone's from another country doesn't mean they're going to make your country less safe. While believing that life was better / would be better if it was just your own group may make you feel better about your own identity, that line of thinking is going to close many doors for you in your life.

Look at history. The melting pot (New immigrants are transformed into Americans. They cease to think of themselves in terms of their ethnicity, and regard themselves instead as American) idea was a bust. The best way to achieve social harmony is to recognize and celebrate our ethnic diversity... conformity is boring and conventionality is mundane.
