Men's mags see readership soar

A new study of magazine readers offers a few bright spots for publishers amid the gloom of the advertising slowdown.
The total audience for men's mags grew 8.3% since last fall, to nearly 40 million readers, according to Mediamark Research, whose numbers are closely eyed by media planners.

Six men's mags - Maxim, Esquire, GQ, Men's Fitness, Men's Health and Men's Journal - had their readerships measured.

Maxim, which has 5.3 readers per copy, led the pack with an audience of 12.2 million - twice the size of second-biggest GQ.

Fast-growing FHM was not part of the study, while Stuff, surveyed for the first time this fall, boasted 5 million.

The total audience of the 205 mags studied was flat the past year.

Nicky Hilton's MTV veejay boyfriend, Brian McFayden, is hitting back at the model who says he's a deadbeat dad. As we reported, stunner Heather Knese, 21, claims McFayden, 28, hasn't paid child support since July for her 14-month-old son she says she had with McFayden. But McFayden's lawyer counters that he's asked Knese for a DNA test but she won't comply: "Only she knows who she slept with."

Knese insists: "I wasn't with anyone else. And the last time we were in court Brian did ask the judge for a DNA test, but he said no because Brian signed the birth certificate and Dane is more than a year old, so it's a legal document of paternity . . . He's just trying to get out of paying child support."

Meanwhile, the former couple's friends are weighing in. "Brian is the devil," fumes Knese's Marilyn models agent Michael Ross, noting that he never provided health insurance for mother or child. But McFayden's friend, Motorola exec David Pinsky, calls Knese the bad apple. "She can be a cruel and vindictive person and I think she is a slightly off-center individual jealous of anyone who befriends Brian."
