Supermodel Schiffer Gives Birth

LONDON (Reuters) - German supermodel Claudia Schiffer gave birth to a baby boy by Caesarian section on Thursday, her spokeswoman told Reuters.

The baby is the first child for both Schiffer, 32, and her husband, British film producer Matthew Vaughn, who was at her side for the birth.

Her spokeswoman said the as yet unnamed baby weighed in at seven lbs and was in good health.

"Both parents are utterly thrilled at the birth of their first child and both mother and baby are doing very well," she said, adding that Vaughn was planning to stay the night at the hospital with his wife and child.

"The couple have yet to decide on a name for the baby but all are expected to return home in a few days."

The model joins the ranks of other celebrity mums who have given birth in the past year, including fellow supermodel Kate Moss, actress Elizabeth Hurley and Spice Girl Victoria Beckham.

The spokeswoman said Schiffer was admitted to the exclusive Portland Hospital in central London on Thursday morning for a planned delivery.

The Portland is a favorite with celebrity mums -- sometimes dubbed the "too posh to push" brigade for choosing Caesarian deliveries.

Beckham and Hurley are among a long list of stars who have given birth by Caesarian at the hospital while Moss bucked the trend by giving birth to her daughter Lila naturally at another London hospital in September.

The spokeswoman said Schiffer had wanted a natural delivery but had a Caesarian on the advice of her doctors.

"Claudia crushed one of her feet in an accident in November and has been on crutches ever since so doctors advised her against a natural delivery."

Schiffer and Vaughn, who produced the hit film "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels," married last May in a small country church near their Elizabethan mansion in Suffolk, eastern England.

The model, who has graced the cover of more than 700 magazines, is estimated to have accumulated a $55 million fortune from 15 years at the top of the modeling business. She was discovered in a German disco in 1987 while still a student.

Model/actress Sadie Frost is being treated in an exclusive clinic after a suicide scare, The Sun can reveal.

The British actress is suffering from “severe” post natal depression and has checked into London’s £1,000-a-night Cromwell Hospital.

Worried hubby, Hollywood star Jude Law, has flown home from America to be at her side.

Jude dashed back days after Sadie, 37, returned from Los Angeles where she had marked her arms in a “cry for help”.

Speaking for the first time about the state of the couple’s relationship, Jude admitted he and Sadie — whose fourth baby Rudy was born five weeks premature in September — had problems.

But he vowed to do everything in his power to save their five-year marriage.

The Talented Mr Ripley star, 30, opened his heart as speculation mounted about the couple.

Speaking via his publicist Simon Halls, Jude said: “When Sadie arrived back in England at the weekend she went straight into a clinic.

“She has been suffering a severe bout of post-natal depression. Her treatment does not involve taking drugs — just seeing doctors, talking and recuperating. She is there because she is feeling very blue.”

Jude added: “This depression can be a serious thing and it has left Sadie feeling very sad and run down and she is just trying to get a handle on it.

“She has had so much on her plate recently and realises she needs help and to catch her breath. Not only does she have to look after four children — including a baby — she runs a successful business and has been overseeing the refurbishment of our new house.”

Mr Halls said: “I never know how she has been in a position to balance her busy life.

“But I have spoken to her in the last few days and she seems fine and is very upbeat about beating the post-natal depression.

“Sadie will be in the clinic for a couple of days more and it is doing her the power of good. Her stay there is already paying dividends.”

He added: “Jude is looking after their children. He is so worried Sadie is not well and wanted to be close to her.”

Mr Halls played down reports of Sadie’s suicide bid — after she checked into a hospital in Los Angeles last week.

But pals maintain she scratched her arms in a “cry for help”.

The friends say the couple’s marriage is in crisis and that is the reason she marked her arm.

But Jude told Mr Halls that they were going to do everything in their power to make it work.

He said: “Jude has told me they are a long-term committed couple although he admitted there have been ups and downs. The strain of the depression has made things a bit tough.

“But the marriage is strong. They have just bought a big new family home and are looking forward to moving into it.”

Jude — who has bought a £2million property in North London — hopes a film the couple are due to start working on will bring them closer together.

They are set to shoot World of Tomorrow, which Sadie will produce — and Jude and Gwyneth Paltrow will star in.

Mr Halls — of Huvane Baum Halls PR agency which also looks after Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman — said: “Working on this film will give them more time together.

“By that time Sadie will be fully recovered. They are looking forward to working together.”

Jude and Dracula star Sadie have three children together — Rafferty, seven, Iris, two, and four-month-old Rudy.

Sadie also has a 12-year-old son, Finlay, from her marriage to Spandau Ballet’s Gary Kemp.

Rudy weighed just 5lbs 5ozs when he was born in September — following a year where the couple hardly spent any time together due to Jude’s film commitments.

Pals said the couple were forced to conduct just a “telephone relationship”.

At the time of the birth, Jude was in the US filming Cold Mountain, with Nicole Kidman and Renée Zellweger. He rushed from the set and flew home.

The following month their daughter Iris went to hospital after eating part of an ecstasy tablet she found on the floor at a kids party in a West End club.

The drama shook the couple but Iris was given the all clear after tests.

Jude was away in Romania, on the set of Cold Mountain.
