* Bare breasts were two a penny, skirts indecently short and bikinis microscopic at Milan Fashion Week over the weekend. Tom Ford's collection for Gucci featured minis so abbreviated they should have carried a Government health warning (Hilary Alexander, The Daily Telegraph).

* Roberto Cavalli's models frolicked down the runway wearing cheongsams so short and tightly corseted that they made Suzy Wong look like a nun. (Suzy Menkes, IHT)

* A lot of designers here can't seem to get themselves out of a snarl and produce clothes that women might grow excited about next season. But this hapless approach won't lift anyone's skirts.Zippers and other dressmaker notions are occasionally invested with more importance than they rightfully deserve, much as puppets are said to come to life magically when nobody is looking.
