An obsessed fan who wanted to marry supermodel Claudia Schiffer has been sent to a psychiatric clinic after stealing 124 wedding rings.

The man used a toy pistol and wore a Halloween mask to steal the rings and a watch worth £40,000.

He told the court he had actually wanted to steal three or four wedding dresses for Schiffer to choose from.

But the bridal shop he went into was too full, so he decided to go to the nearby jewellery store instead.

The man, known only as Julio S, told the court: "I was only thinking about Claudia Schiffer.

"I needed so many rings so that she could pick one out. Besides, I wasn't sure about her ring size."

A Berlin court said the 32-year-old was a danger to society and ordered him sent to a clinic for treatment.

But it ruled the Mozambican man was not guilty of robbery due to mental illness.

"The man has lived for years with the obsession of meeting Claudia Schiffer and wanting to marry her," the judge said.
