Ryder Chosen by Jacobs

Was it only three months ago that Winona Ryder mesmerized Americans at her shoplifting trial, in part because of the chic Marc Jacobs outfits she sometimes wore to court? One person who noticed was Mr. Jacobs, among fashion's leading provocateurs, who has cast Ms. Ryder in his spring advertising campaign.

Ms. Ryder was convicted of stealing $5,560 worth of goods from Saks Fifth Avenue, including a Marc Jacobs sweater priced at $760.

Yesterday, Mr. Jacobs was quoted by Women's Wear Daily asserting that he was inspired to use Ms. Ryder "because I thought she looked so beautiful in all these pictures that we've seen recently," both at the trial and elsewhere. The ads, photographed by Juergen Teller, show the actress lounging in a posh hotel room clad in a white robe and pale pumps by Mr. Jacobs, one of the designer's handbags propped at her feet.
